A Half-Day Escape to Coronado Island (No Passport Required)
Sometimes the best mini-vacations don't require a flight, a suitcase, or even a full day off… just a short ferry ride across the bay. Even though we live in San Diego, Coronado Island still manages to feel like its own little world, and every time we go, it's an instant reset button. This time, we packed a whole "getaway" feeling into just a few hours, and I have to share how perfect it was.
The Ferry Ride Over
We took the Flagship ferry from downtown San Diego over to the island, and honestly, the ride itself is half the fun. It's short and smooth - just enough time to lean on the rail, feel the breeze, and take in the San Diego skyline from the water.
You glide right past the USS Midway, and there's something so fun about waving at other boats as you cruise by like you're in your own little movie montage. It's not a long ride, but it's the perfect ride before stepping onto the island.
Bikes, Please
Once you land at the ferry landing, you're greeted with the cutest little strip of shops, restaurants, and bike rentals. We couldn't resist - grabbed a couple of cruiser bikes and hit the bike path that loops around the island. There's a paved, dedicated pathway that takes you straight to the Hotel del Coronado, and biking there in the sun with the ocean breeze in your face is exactly the kind of "pinch me" moment that makes a trip feel special.
The Hotel Del - Gorgeous and a Little Spooky
You guys, the Hotel del Coronado is stunning. It's this gorgeous, historic beachfront hotel that's been around for over a century (it opened way back in 1888, so yes, it's that old), and it's been featured in a handful of classic films, including Marilyn Monroe's "Some Like It Hot." So there's some real Hollywood history baked into those walls.
We locked up our bikes and just wandered the grounds for a while. The interior is gorgeous - all that old-world charm, wood details, and character - and yes, it's also famously said to be haunted, which honestly just adds to the fun (nothing like a little ghost story to spice up your afternoon). After exploring inside, we walked down to the beach right behind the hotel and just enjoyed the water for a bit. It's such a peaceful, pretty spot to pause.
Back to the Landing for Lunch + Souvenirs
After working up an appetite biking around, we pedaled back to the ferry landing shops and grabbed lunch outside with a gorgeous waterfront view — genuinely one of those "why would I want to be anywhere else right now" meals. Since the ferry only runs once an hour, we had some built-in downtime to browse the little souvenir shops while we waited for our ride back.

Honestly, this whole outing was such a fun, easy, feel-good day. It's the kind of adventure that gives you full "we're on vacation" vibes - skyline views, bike rides, a hauntingly beautiful hotel, beach time, good food - all packed into a half day. If you're in San Diego and have a few hours to spare, hop on that ferry to Coronado. You will not regret it.
