A Michelangelo Masterpiece Just Minutes from the Colosseum

I can’t be the only one who thought I’d be seeing Michelangelo’s David during my visit to Rome. Ok, so spoiler alert - it’s not there. It’s in Florence (a couple hours away), and unfortunately that just wasn’t in the cards for us this time. BUT, I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that there’s still a Michelangelo masterpiece you can see in Rome - and it’s completely free, just a short walk from the Colosseum.

After a quick 10-minute stroll (slightly uphill, but nothing too wild), you arrive at San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains). From the outside, it’s pretty understated. But walk through the doors, step into the nave, and head to the right side.

I say “head to the right,” but realistically, you won’t need directions. You’ll spot it immediately. Look for the group of people subtly (and not-so-subtly) elbowing their way closer with phones in the air… that’s your spot.

And once you see it, there’s really no looking away.

Michelangelo’s Moses is massive, powerful, and incredibly detailed. He’s seated, but there’s this intense energy in his posture, like he might stand up at any moment. The muscles in his arms are so defined you can practically see the tension under the skin, the veins subtly raised, his hands strong. And the beard… honestly, the beard deserves its own moment. These perfectly sculpted curls cascade down like he’s been using the best curl cream in Rome for centuries.

It’s one of those pieces where you keep thinking, “how is this marble?” The level of realism is kind of mind-blowing. You can walk around it, take in different angles, and each time you notice something new.

And it’s just tucked inside a quiet church minutes from Rome’s busiest landmarks!

Is it worth the stop? Absolutely. It’s free, it fits perfectly into a Colosseum day, and you get to stand face-to-face with a Michelangelo masterpiece without ever leaving Rome!
